FIELD: geophysical methods of investigation. SUBSTANCE: method involves marking and reading of marks by application of layer of substance with enhanced reflecting properties to surface of armour of cable. Reading of marks is accomplished by isolation of light flux from applied layer. Device for realization of method includes winch, dynamometer, set of supports with rollers, marking unit in the form of separable vessel made of insulation material with spiral manufactured from metal with enhanced reflecting properties put into it. Solution of salt of same metal is poured into vessel. Spiral embraces cable. It is connected to positive pole of DC source, negative pole is linked to armour of cable. Unit for reading of marks is fabricated in the form of separable body housing illuminator and photodetector. EFFECT: improved accuracy of marking and reading of marks. 5 dwg
