FIELD: production of sponge metal in shaft furnace. SUBSTANCE: method includes charging of metal oxides such as iron, nickel and cobalt oxides onto furnace top and reduction of charge in countercurrent flow of hot products of natural has conversion. Oxygen-to-carbon ratio O/C in gas supplied for conversion is maintained within 0.98-1.10 at gas temperature of 600-1000 C. Reducing gas for all reduction process is obtained in working space of furnace with ratio of volume of furnace conversion zone to volume of reduction zone being 0.04-0.4. Heating of oxygen-nitrogen mixture up to 960-1485 C and natural gas up 20-400 C is carried out separately, and they are mixed directly before introduction into shaft furnace. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 2 dwg, 5 tbl
