FIELD: automated control of well drilling. SUBSTANCE: on the basis of measurement information on value of power on bottom hole and wear rate of rock cutting tool, as well as design parameters of crown bit, such as end face area, middle radius and crown bit operation intensity, value of penetration rate is calculated by formula given in invention description. Accuracy of prognosis of results in control is guaranteed by achieving equally of prognosis and measured values of penetration rate. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 1 dwg
