FIELD: continuous casting of billets. SUBSTANCE: method involves continuous supplying of liquid metal through adapter sleeve into crystallizer cavity; forming ingot shell and withdrawal of hardening casting from crystallizer. Ingot shell is periodically shifted by providing relative motion between adapter sleeve and/or crystallizer, with initial motion of adapter sleeve and/or crystallizer relative to ingot shell not depending on cycling of withdrawal of ingot from crystallizer.
