FIELD: automation of mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: workpiece is machined with cutting tool at optimum process parameters, checking the values of vibroacoustic and force signals and their increments within a period of time. Wear of the tool is identified when the values of vibroacoustic and force signals and their increments reach their threshold values. Said values of signals and their increments are determined and set in the process of plunge-cutting until said signals reach the first extrema. The device for realization of this method comprises vibroacoustic transmitter, force transmitter, two elements of automatic amplification adjustment, two amplitude detectors, two adders, four memory elements, seven amplifiers, two indicators, three upper level comparators, two gates, two extremum-determining units, four comparison units, ten comparators, two peak detectors, five AND elements, and OR element.
