FIELD: fat and butter, medical and cosmetic industries. SUBSTANCE: preparation of lanolin involves alkaline refining of wool fat having lining made of an aqueous saline solution of ammonium sulfate, separation of soap stock, washing of the fat to remove the soap with an ammonium sulfate solution and treatment with a mixture of a saline solution containing bleaching agents on heating, separation of the phases and isolation of the desired product and washing the latter followed by separation. During the alkaline refining of the far the neutralizing agent is a 10-12% sodium hydroxide solution A 1-2% ammonium sulfate solution is used with the sodium hydroxide solution to fat ratio ranging from 1:1 to 1.5-1.0. The process temperature is 65-70 C and the reaction mixture is heated to 98-100 C. The bleaching agent includes a mixture of a 1-2% sodium chloride solution and a 14-15% solution of a substance selected from chloroamine, sodium hypochloride, a sodium dichloroisocyanaric acid and salt, hydrogen peroxide with the solution to fat ratio ranging from 0.6:1.0 to 0.8:1 and a temperature of 40-60 C for 3-4 hr. After the separation, lanolin is completely dehydrated at 75-85 C and a pressure of 0.4-0.6 kgf/sq.cm for 1-2 hr. The soap stock is treated with anhydrous ammonium sulfate in an amount of 3-4% of its weight while boiling the mixture for 20-30 min. The mixture is them separated into free fatty acids and an ammonium sulfate solution. On completion of the bleaching operation, the reaction mixture is further treated with anhydrous chloramine or a sodium dichloroisocyanaric acid salt in an amount of 1-2% of the starting weight of the wool fat.
