FIELD: plastic working of metals, in particular, plastic deformation of surgical tool edges. SUBSTANCE: method involves deforming statically loaded workpiece between beveled working surfaces of opposed strikers by exposing them to ultrasonic oscillations generated by electromechanical converters. Workpiece is fed to deformation zone by displacement in direction perpendicular to direction of static force applied to workpiece. One converter is positioned for axial motion and loaded by static force of pressure member applied to striker of other converter. Cutting edge thickness is controlled by contactless nondestructive method. In the process of deformation oscillation amplitude of each striker and axial displacement of converters are measured and cutting edge thickness is determined on the basis of value difference. Deflection of cutting edge thickness from predetermined value is eliminated by regulating process parameters, with striker oscillation amplitude being used as regulating parameter. In other cases workpiece feed speed or pressure member static force may be used as regulating parameter. EFFECT: increased efficiency and improved quality of cutting edges. 4 cl, 3 dwg, 1 tbl
