FIELD: measurement technology, measurement of linear and angular translations of tools of machines. SUBSTANCE: converter provides for continuous measurement of linear translation in steps of 1.0 $$$ and for automatic compensation for thermal expansion of scale and inter- step error. Converter has rule 1 with two parallel measurement surfaces 2 and 4. Measurement surface 2 has rectangular areas with constant step which edges 3 are used as reference marks for transducers measuring translation and measurement surface 4 is smooth. Inductive pickups 5 and 6 measure translation of rule over marks in sequence and inductive pickups 7 and 8 measure air clearance between inductive pickups and measurement surfaces of rule. In linearization unit 16 output signals from inductive pickups 5 and 6 are converted to continuous signal of sawtooth shape corrected with allowance for variations of value of air clearance measured by pickups 7 and 8. Continuous signal is converter in analog-to-digital converter 22 to binary code which less significant position corresponds to translation of rule by 1.0 $$$. Control unit 23 forms controlling instructions for switching over of pairs of inductive pickups 5,7 or 6,8 in every 1000.0 $$$ of translations of rule and controlling instructions to linearization unit. Information on number of covered steps (1000.0 $$$) and fractions of translation step of rule in $$$ is displayed on indicator 32. Compensation of errors of scale is ensured by overlapping of step error by working section of output signal of inductive pickups 5 and 6. If rule is manufactured in the form of ring continuous measurement of angular translations from 0 up to 360 deg is secured.
