FIELD: chemical and heat treatment of steel articles. SUBSTANCE: steel articles are affected by two-stepped heat treatment, the process takes place in powder composition. Said composition comprises 50 mass % of carbide-forming metal, 2 mass % of sodium fluoride, 30-33 mass % of aluminium oxide, 5-71 mass % of sodium carbonate, 10-15 mass % of potassium ferrocyanide. The first step of said treatment is carried out at 650-750 C within 1-2 h, the second step is carried out at 950-1150 C within 2-6 h. EFFECT: improved efficiency of the method. 3 tbl
