FIELD: medicine, narcology. SUBSTANCE: method involves determination of activity of the following enzymes in blood serum of patient: gamma-glutamyltransferase, alkaline phosphatase, alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase and high density lipoprotein cholesterol content. Alcoholism is diagnosed at the following indices: at simultaneous increase of activity of gamma-glutamyltransferase and alkaline phosphatase (above 1.25-fold) and activity of alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase and content of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (above 1.15-fold) as compared with normal values, i. e. above 50 U/l, 175 U/l and 1.4 mM.
