FIELD: measuring equipment; device may be used for testing high-voltage switchboards for switching capacity. SUBSTANCE: medium under examination is probed by rising test voltage with simultaneous check of current flowing through medium under the effect of this voltage. Probing of medium is stopped as soon as avalanche-like amplification of formation of current carriers in medium under test is started, nonreversible character of this formation being avoided in this case. The above-indicated process is testified by abrupt increase in value of checked current which grew monotonously before that moment. When setting permissible value of checked current at the beginning of its abrupt increase, avalanche-like process of formation of current carrier in medium under test is interrupted without causing breakdown. After checked current is interrupted, probing of medium by rising test voltage is repeated. This procedure is continued till measurement of electric strength of medium becomes unnecessary. EFFECT: higher reliability, accuracy and efficiency of measurements. 3 cl, 2 dwg
