FIELD: metal machining by cutting, in particular, machining the grooves of pilger rolls for hot rolling of pipes. SUBSTANCE: in machining of grooves of pilger rolls with variable groove form as roll turns, machining of sections over arc of circle of different radii is effected by boring tool which is given rotary motion and radial motion according to program of stroke. Side bevels of groove form are machined by straight-turning tool installed in the process of cutting square to tangent of form of side bevel. In this case, rotation of tool is discontinued and tool is given radial and axial motions in plans running through tool axis. Rotation of roll in machining of side bevels is carried out in mode of main motion. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 6 dwg
