FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: this relates to machine-tool industry and can be used for automatic selection of optimal modes of operation with subsequent multi-functional diagnosis of cutting process conditions with ensuring preset wear-resistance of cutting and quality in formation of surface layer. According to method, preset are optimal modes of operation, and after each working cycle effected is discrete restoration of cutting wedge geometry by electric-spark alloying in conditions of periodic contacting of anode electrode and cathode electrode at ultrasonic frequency and preset amplitude. Device allows in addition to optimization of machining modes of operation with subsequent multiple-parameter diagnosis of cutting process also for automatic control of electric and acoustic modes of electric-spark alloying in process of discrete restoration of cutting wedge geometry.
