FIELD: metallurgy and foundry, in particular, production of heavy magnesium-containing units (reagents) for out-of-blast-furnace desulfuration of liquid iron, reduction and modification of steel, production of magnesium cast iron with globular and vermicular graphite in production of shaped castings. SUBSTANCE: magnesium charge is introduced into through hole preliminarily made in unit blank with formation of hollows from opposite sides of holes. Hollows provide for intensive heating of charge from its end faces when unit is immersed into melt. The offered allows, in simple and economically efficient process, manufacture of unit with average density above 7.0 g/cu.cm, both, from steel and cast iron with magnesium content up to 3.4% of the total weight of unit for steel-magnesium unit, and up to 3% for cast-iron-magnesium unit. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 1 dwg
