FIELD: cigarette industry. SUBSTANCE: filtering member is made from two-component filaments having core and cover. Core is preferably made from high-strength thermoplastic material, preferably polypropylene, and is completely sheathed with cover manufactured from plasticized cellulose acetate, ethylene and vinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl alcohol or ethylene and vinyl alcohol copolymer. Method involves blowing melt to obtain filaments with average diameter of about 10 micron. This material is used for making tobacco smoke filtering member. Ultra thin filaments of different cross sections providing larger area of surface require smaller amounts of air for melt blowing and treatment processes. During manufacture of covers from polyvinyl alcohol or ethylene and vinyl alcohol copolymer, filtering members are easily broken up under the action of environment, with only plurality of ultra thin, practically unnoticeable filaments being remained. Filters and cigarettes manufactured from such material possess predetermined gustatory and technological qualities characteristic of known filtering members made from cellulose acetate, and have smaller production costs. As core material is not absorbing, provision for comparable qualities requires smaller amounts of plasticizers or additives. Yarn, bundle or filter manufactured from such materials, has longer keeping time.
