FIELD: preparation of chloromethanes, preferably chloroform. SUBSTANCE: process comprises initiated chlorination of methyl chloride, methylene chloride or mixture thereof with chlorine in liquid phase at temperature of boiling reaction mixture under pressure determined by resistance of rectification systems, removal of hydrogen chloride and additional selection of reaction products from vapor phase, recycle of unreacted methyl chloride and methylene chloride for chlorination. Rectification is carried out under pressure determined by resistance of system of removal of hydrogen chloride to select vapor phase composed of hydrogen chloride methyl chloride and some methylene chloride. EFFECT: smaller amount of carbon tetrachloride, improved ecological parameters, simplified method and reduced specific consumption of power resources due to lower temperature and lower pressure of chlorination process. 6 cl, 7 ex, 1 tbl
