PIPE SPINNER Russian patent published in 2001 - IPC

FIELD: devices for making-and-breaking of drill, casing and tubing pipes in round trip operations in drilling and operation of oil and gas wells. SUBSTANCE: pipe spinner contains cylindrical body supported in bearings on bed. Accommodated inside body are two rings interconnected by flexible members located parallel to body longitudinal axis over circumference. Lower ring is connected with body by means of protrusions-splines found in corresponding windows of body lower part. Located in the same windows above ring protrusions are springs ensuring motion of lower ring up and down. Upper ring may rotate in bearing relative to body. Body in upper part is constantly braked by brake. Gripping of pipe found inside body cavity is effected with the help of flexible members displacing to center of body internal cavity and uniformly embracing of pipe internal surface with turn of upper driving ring relative to fixed body. The larger is an angle of turn of upper ring relative to lower ring, the less is a distance between these rings in vertical since length of flexible members is invariable. Upon attainment of tractive force, transmitted by flexible members to lower ring and exceeding friction in body-brake unit, body starts rotating together with gripped pipe. In this case, the greater resistance to rotation, the larger is the force of gripping of pipe body by flexible members, i.e. rotary torque rises. After completion of making or breaking, springs return lower ring to its initial position, flexible members are located parallel to body axis, and device is ready again for operation.
