FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention describes synthesis of a novel compound 5-methyl-3-(5-nitrofurylacrylidene)-furan-2-one. Levulinic acid that is an industrial raw is subjected for condensation by monoreactive synthesis with acetic anhydride at 130-132 C followed by reaction with 5-nitrofurylacrolein at 38-40 C and the following isolation of the end product from 50% ethyl alcohol solution. Now this compound is investigated as a veterinary agent that can be used for treatment of calves and piglets with gastroenteric and respiratory diseases of bacterial etiology.
