FIELD: chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method of decrease and/or removal of permanganate-reducing compounds, for example, acetaldehyde, propionic acid and alkyliodide impurities in the process of methanol carbonylation. Method is carried out by multistage distillation. Product of carbonylation is distilled in the first distillation column to yield a purified product and a head fraction. A head fraction (28) is separated for light phase (30) containing acetic acid and water and heavy fraction containing methyl acetate and organic iodide. A light fraction (30) is fed in distillatory (18) to obtain two currents: residual current (1) containing water and acetic acid and current of upper distillate (2) containing methyl iodide, methyl acetate, methanol, C2-12- alkyliodides and permanganate-reducing compounds (36). Current of upper distillate (2) is fed in the second distillatory (22) where alkyliodides and permanganate-reducing compounds are separated. Alkyliodides and permanganate-reducing compounds are removed from the second distillatory (22).
