FIELD: metal working. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to working of metal by pressure and it can be used at pressing scrap and sheet metal waste. Waste material charged into charging hopper of press is compacted in pressing chamber in three using first, second and third compactors. At first step, preliminary compaction of waste materials is carried out to width of pressed pack under continuously acting force of first compactor. At second stage intermediate compaction of waste materials is carried out to height of pressed pack by means of second compactor moved in pressing chamber vertically relative to charging hopper. At third step, waste material is finally compacted to length of pressed pack to obtain final compactness by means of third compactor moved in pack chamber pf press square to charging hopper. If necessary, waste material is trimmed by knife mounted on first compactor when the latter is moved at first step of compacting. All compactors are exposed to action of hydraulic force at beginning of working stroke and during return stroke. Value of hydraulic force is less than maximum value of force of hydraulic drive system. EFFECT: improved operating characteristics of press. 24 cl, 9 dwg
