FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: invention is designed for stepless starting of machines and protection of drives from overloads. Proposed start-and-safety fluid coupling contains impellers with blades. Blades of at least one of impellers are provided with axial edges pointed to central chamber limited by nonworking surfaces of impeller walls. Novelty is that diameter D0 of axial edges is connected to active diameter Da of impellers by relationships 1,7<Da/D0<1,85, and length L of axial edge is connected to maximum width Hmax of blades by relationship 0,2≤L/Hmax≤0,75. Partition can be installed in central chamber being connected to one of impellers and dividing central chamber space into two sections communicating with each other and with interblade channels. Section between nonworking walls of impeller and partition connected to impeller is provided with at least one throttle hole on periphery. EFFECT: improved starting characteristics and safety of fluid coupling, increased efficiency. 3 cl, 4 dwg
