FIELD: television systems.

SUBSTANCE: proposed method and device intended for use in environment monitoring, search and rescue, surveillance, and intrusion protection television systems provide for enhancing contrast of all images in compliance with contrast of separated part and eliminating impact of high-contrast parts on operation of automatic contrast enhancement circuit. This is attained by gating video signal in positioner chosen area, evaluating separated signal, and clamping white and black levels of remaining signal as a whole in compliance with these black and white levels.

EFFECT: enhanced reliability of automatic enhancement of television image contrast.
