FIELD: physics, communications.

SUBSTANCE: invention concerns communication systems, particularly multiplexing of multiple data streams in a wireless communication system with several carriers. Methods of multiple data stream multiplexing involves frequency division multiplexing (FDM) in OFDM system. M of non-overlapping 'intermissions' are formed using U sub-bands, each intermission featuring different set of S sub-bands. Sub-bands of each intermission are alternated with sub-bands of each of the other intermissions. M time intervals can be defined for each symbol interval, with indices from 1 to M assigned to each time interval. Time interval indices can be indicated in intermissions, so that frequency distribution is performed for each time interval index, and intermissions used for pilot signal transmission feature different length compared to intermissions used for each time interval index, which improves channel estimation characteristics. Each data stream can be processed as data packets of given size, and different amounts of time intervals can be used for each data packet depending on coding and modulation pattern used in data packet.
