FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to hydrometallurgy, and namely to leaching of copper from copper sulphide-bearing concentrates, such as yellow pyrite. The process involves use of pyrite as catalytic agent for reducing ferric iron in order to avoid passivation of yellow pyrite surface. The process is performed in conditions at which pyrite is virtually not oxidised, for example by maintaining working potential of the solution at appropriate level. At that, yellow pyrite-to-pyrite mass ratio is within less than 3:1 to 1:20. Leaching is performed in acid sulphate medium and it can include oxidation with oxygen-containing gas. Then leached copper is extracted, for example by solvent or by electrochemical isolation.
EFFECT: providing almost complete copper extraction at atmospheric pressure just within four hours.
