SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to storing and retrieving information. Several versions of the invention use synchronisation adapters to synchronise information between WinFS and non-WinFS data sources. Examples of the adapters include an adapter which synchronises notepad information between a WinFS contact folder and a non-WinFS mailbox. In these cases, adapter developers can use API of main WinFS synchronisation services to access services provided by WinFS platform synchronisation so as to develop a conversion code for the circuit between the WinFS circuit and the non-WinFS circuit of the data source. Also an adapter developer ensures support of the protocol for exchanging changes with the non-WinFS data source. The synchronisation adapter is called and controlled using an API synchronisation controller and reports on progress of execution and errors using the said API.

EFFECT: provision for a storage platform, which expands the data platform beyond the limits of existing file systems and data base systems and which serves as storage for all data types.
