FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method involves: step (A) for preparing an optically transparent substrate containing a polymer composition and a light-absorbing chromophore, where said polymer composition contains a continuous phase and a dispersion phase, where said dispersion phase has particle size less than approximately 200 nm; and step (B) for irradiating the elementary volume of the optically transparent substrate with light with a holographic interference pattern, in which the pattern has a first wavelength and intensity, both sufficient for facilitating phase change in at least part of the dispersion phase inside the elementary volume of the substrate to generate refraction index changes inside the elementary volume of the substrate which correspond to the holographic interference pattern.
EFFECT: creating an optically readable information unit which corresponds to the elementary volume.
