FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to track and identify type composition of a clustered air target (CAT) from the 'turbojet aircraft' (TJA) class. The method involves parallel tracking on Doppler frequency of a CAT centroid, calculated as the mean value of Doppler frequencies caused by signal reflection from airframes of the cluster, as well as on Doppler frequencies caused by signal reflection from rotating parts of the first low-pressure compressor stage of the engine unit of each target in the cluster from the TJA class; estimating on each operating cycle of both tracking filters, Dopper frequency differences between the CAT centroid and the first low-pressure compressor stage of the engine unit of each airplane in the cluster; the entire range of possible values of estimates of said differences is a priori broken into non-overlapping sub-bands, each corresponding to only one type of target from the TJA class; calculating for several intermediate operating cycles of both optimum filters, probabilities of estimates of frequency differences falling in each of the a priori formed sub-bands; determining the numbers of sub-bands for which these probability values are maximum; comparing said probabilities with a threshold value of probability of identifying the type of target and making a decision on identifying the type of each airplane in the cluster from the TJA class with probability now lower than the given value if the threshold is exceeded, otherwise a decision on failure to identify with given probability the type of the airplane in the group is taken.

EFFECT: broader functionalities for detecting the type composition of CAT.
