FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: vacuum plasma application of multi-layer coating is performed. Lower layer of nitride or carbonitride of titanium, zirconium and molybdenum compound is applied at the following component ratio, wt %: titanium 88.5-92.0, zirconium 4.0-6.0, molybdenum 4.0-5.5. After that, intermediate layer of nitride or carbonitride of titanium, zirconium and molybdenum compound is applied at the following component ratio, wt %: titanium 78.5-84.0, zirconium 12.0-16.0, molybdenum 4.0-5.5. After that, upper layer of nitride or carbonitride of titanium and zirconium compound is applied at the following component ratio, wt %: titanium 89.0-92.0, zirconium 8.0-11.0. Application of coating layers is performed with three cathodes horizontally located in one plane; the first and the second of the above cathodes are made from titanium and zirconium and located opposite to each other, and the third cathode is made from titanium and molybdenum and located between them. Lower layer is applied using the first and the third cathodes; intermediate layer is applied using the second and the third cathodes, and upper layer is applied using the first and the second cathodes.

EFFECT: improving operability of cutting tool.
