SUBSTANCE: method of compressing graphics files includes operations for changing geometrical dimensions of initial frames of a graphic image with subsequent decompression of frames of the graphic image and the qualitative estimate of parameters, wherein the peak signal-to-noise ratio is predetermined, a time iter value equal to zero is assigned; performing two-dimensional wavelet transformation over the initial frame of the graphic image A(l,h), wavelet coefficients of which form a matrix Y(l,h), which is then compressed and then decompressed, after which a zero matrix is formed and the elements are replaced with corresponding elements of the decompressed matrix; the reconstructed image is then formed by performing inverse two-dimensional wavelet transformation over the zero matrix with the changed elements, after which the peak signal-to-noise ratio is determined, which characterises the quality of the reconstructed frame compared with the initial frame and, if the calculated ratio is greater than a given value, the described operations are carried out while increasing the current value of the variable iter by one and replacing the matrix of the initial graphic image (l,h) with the formed matrix Y(I,h).

EFFECT: high degree of compression of graphics files and rate of transfer thereof over data channels for a given signal-to-noise ratio peak value.
