FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method includes mounting on the inspected article two acoustic emission transducers, determining the sound attenuation law, receiving acoustic emission signals generated by a defect in the article during operation or loading, detecting Lamb wave modes in form of a wave packet, obtaining a frequency-time relationship on spectrograms, selecting energy maxima of antisymmetric and symmetric modes, using the difference in time of arrival of energy maxima at selected frequencies to determine the distance between transducers and acoustic emission sources and then calculating coordinates of the defect in the article using the established attenuation law.
EFFECT: enabling determination of coordinates of a defect from measurement data of one pulse of acoustic emission, reducing the number of predetermined parameters, thereby considerably improving accuracy.
