FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods of application of wear-resistant coatings to a cutting tool and can be used in metal working. Vacuum plasma application of a multi-layered coating is performed. First, a lower layer of titanium nitride is applied. Then, an upper layer of nitride of titanium, chrome and niobium is applied at the following component ratio, wt %: titanium 79.0-85.0, chrome 9.0-11.0, niobium 6.0-10.0. Application of layers of the coating is performed with three cathodes located horizontally in one plane, the first one of which consists of titanium and chrome, the second one consists of titanium and is located opposite to the first one, and the third one consists of titanium and niobium and is located between them; with that, the lower layer is applied using the second cathode, and the upper layer is applied using the first and the third cathodes.
EFFECT: application of a multi-layered coating contributes to serviceability of a cutting tool.
