Disclosed are biomarkers, methods and assay systems for the identification of poor prognosis of interstitial pneumonia (pulmonary fibrosis) in an individual diagnosed with suspected of having interstitial pneumonia. Method comprises the identification in a biological sample obtained from said subject at least one of the following: a presence of a genetic variant selected from group consisting of: rs2076295, rs3778337, rs4727443, rs2034650, rs1992272, rs1981997, rs17563986, rs8070723, rs12610495, rs2109069, rs1379326, rs2609255, rs10484326, rs10748858, rs2067832, rs11191865, rs1278769, rs1007177, rs10518693, rs393152, rs12373139, rs17690703, rs2532274, rs2532269, rs2668692, rs169201, rs199533 and rs415430; expression level of a marker gene or a plurality of marker genes selected from group consisting of: a marker gene having at least 95 % identity with a sequence selected from group consisting of DSP, DISP2, MAPT, DPP9, CSMD1, MYNN, LRRC34, FAM13A, OBFC1, TOLLIP, ATP11A, IVD, CRHR1, IMP5, LOC100128977, KIAA1267, NSF, WNT3, C17orf69, or homologues or variants thereof; polypeptides encoded by marker genes; fragments of polypeptides and a polynucleotide which is completely complementary to at least part of the marker gene.

EFFECT: methods for predicting risk of interstitial pneumonia is proposed.
