FIELD: space navigation.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for determining the orientation by the coordinates of the observed stars. Two images of a section of the sky are simultaneously obtained in one viewing direction with different angular resolution, as well as a wide and narrow field of view. An onboard catalogue of bright stars for observations with a wide field of view and an archival, complete catalogue of all stars observed with a narrow field of view limited by the permissible magnitude for it are preliminarily compiled. First, the orientation is determined from images with a wide field of view, identifying the stars on it with the data of the onboard catalogue in a known way. Then a temporary online catalogue is formed for the image with a narrow field of view, choosing from the archived, complete, catalogue of stars for a section of the starry sky with a centre obtained from the orientation of the image with a wide field of view and the limited field of view of the image with a narrow field of view. After that, the refined orientation is determined, identifying in the same way the stars in the image with a narrow field of view with the data of the generated temporary online catalogue for this image.
EFFECT: increased orientation accuracy without brute-forcing the data of the onboard star catalogue.
