FIELD: computer engineering. SUBSTANCE: device provides possibility to compute square root by means of optical methods from data stored in digital form in information pages of optoelectronic memory unit. device has first optical shift register 1 which serves for receiving page with initial data, generation of initial and intermediate data and their transmission to optical adder 4. In addition device has second optical shift register which serves for generation of initial data, intermediate values of square root and their transmission to optical adder, as well as for receiving and storing final result of computations. In addition device has first optical inverter which serves for input of sign bit of adder 4 to second shift register 11 and for transmitting of content of second shift register 11 to adder 4. In addition device has light divider for duplication of signals from sign bit of adder. Light divider is controlled by light switch 9. In addition device has four units of optical connections and control unit. EFFECT: increased functional capabilities, increased precision, increased efficiency. 3 cl, 2 dwg
