FIELD: measurement technology. SUBSTANCE: part is cut by a tool when the processing parameters are varied. Physical parameter characterizing the cutting process, for example, cutting emf, is measured. The upper boundary of the zone of the stagnated layer growth in the tool-part contact is determined using this physical parameter. The cutting temperature, an acoustic signal, the value of an electromagnetic radiation from the cutting zone may be also used as the physical parameter. Variation of the processing parameters is provided by increase of cutting section, feeding of additional power to the cutting zone and by subjecting the tool to high-frequency oscillations. EFFECT: improved accuracy. 9 cl, 2 dwg
