FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: cylindrical gears are machined by a tool in the form of elastically interconnected gear cutters which revolves around them. The gear cutters are positioned with front surfaces opposite to each other on condition one gear cutter operates in forward stroke and the other one - in the reverse stroke. The axis of one of the gear cutters is displaced relative to the other one and is set at an angle. The gear blanks are mounted opposite to the axes at equal intercenter distance of each pair. The gear cutters and the gear blanks are oppositely rotated about their axes. At each revolution the gear cutters are additionally set in opposite cyclic axial reciprocating motion which is reversed after each revolution, axial cyclic oscillations, cyclic cutting in feeds and the main feed motion.
