FIELD: cleaning gases. SUBSTANCE: in absorption column waste gases are brought into continuous contact with a water absorbent containing magnesium hydroxide, the absorbent being circulated in the column. Both water absorbent and the absorption product are removed from the bottom of the column and fed into a recovery system. The recovery process includes a two-stage neutralization step followed by a separation step for separating product into a liquid and a solid phases. At the first neutralization step a water slime is utilized as an aid substance produced by separation of the solid phase. The absorbent is partially neutralized. After being partially neutralized, the absorbent is fed to the second stage, at which a roasted, light and finely divided magnesium oxide is utilized as an neutralizing agent. The separated liquid phase, free from solid particles, is supplied to the column as an absorption solution. Prior to being supplied to the first neutralization stage at least a portion of the water slime is preferably wet pulverized at a mill. No incrustation is observed on the gas cleaning equipment. The final concentration of sulfur oxide is ten parts per million. EFFECT: improved quality of gas cleaning. 2 cl, 1 dwg
