FIELD: medicine, in particular, pediatrics and resuscitology. SUBSTANCE: this method prescribes calculating number of abnormal forms of erythrocytes (spherocytes) in blood smears sampled from infants suffering from sepsis. If blood smear assay reveals about 35 to 74 % of affected erythrocytes, progress of sepsis is to be regarded as grave, but favourable outcome is still to be prognosticated. Should number of abnormal forms of erythrocytes attain level of 75 to 87 %, patient's status is to be assessed as extremely grave and prognosis is unfavourable. EFFECT: disclosed method allows accelerating and simplifying procedure of assessing degree of severity of sepsis, prognosticating outcome of each particular case and thus reducing rate of complications and lethality and may be extensively used in resuscitation and pediatric hospitals.
