FIELD: petrochemistry. SUBSTANCE: the petroleum fraction having a boiling temperature of 400 C which is a by- product of the process of catalytic cracking of vacuum distillation of petroleum is mixed and a heptane solvent and dry hydrogen chloride gas are simultaneously fed to the mixture fro 110-130 min. The resulting precipitate is separated by filtration. Heptane is removed from the resulting filtrate in the presence of carbon dioxide and the desired product is recovered. EFFECT: simplified manufacture of drilling muds having improved colmatation properties. 2 tbl
