FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method to perform smelting in arc furnace includes charge heaping up, adding in the mode ensuring maximum coefficient of lining irradiation, finish smelting up in the mode of maximum electrical arc power, metal heating in the mode of maximum coefficient of metal heating intensity, and measuring electric parameters of the arc, coefficient of lining irradiation, and specific electric power consumption. Upon completion charge smelting in the mode of maximum coefficient of lining irradiation the smelting is carried out with support of current limiting value of lining irradiation coefficient, defined by formula: , where W is specific electric power consumption. The method allows one to increase productivity of the furnace and decrease electricity consumption. EFFECT: highly effective smelting. 1 dwg, 1 tbl
