FIELD: chemistry. SUBSTANCE: essence of this process resides in roasting cobalt hydroxide at temperature of 800 to 1000 C, treating resultant oxide at temperature of 75 to 85 C with 1 to 4 percent by mass ammonium chloride solution to be taken in (4 to 8):1 ratio relative to solid cobalt oxide, filtering thus prepared product, washing it with water and then drying it. Disclosed process prescribes treating cobalt oxide with ammonium chloride during 1 to 5 h. EFFECT: this process allows producing cobalt oxide with total content of 0.020 to 0.025 percent by mass of alkaline metals and sulfur content of less than 0.030 percent by mass. 2 cl, 3 dwg
