FIELD: nondestructive material testing. SUBSTANCE: ultrasonic oscillations are emitted through wall into tank by lower converter and after reflection from opposite wall they are received by n converters, including lower one mounted along tank wall and connected in sequence after each due sounding pulse to common receiver. Analog signals from all converters are summed up to form output signal proportional to level of immersion of substance. At same time signal from each converter is compared with its threshold value to form discrete value of immersion of substance of specified density. Effects of interference are removed by time gating of received signals after multiple reflection from tank walls. Device for implementation of method has n piezoconverters 1 (lower one is receiving-and-transmitting converter, the rest are receiving converters), ultrasonic frequency generator 2, input multiplexer 3, amplifier 4, time selector 5, amplitude detector 6, output multiplexer 7, peak detectors 8, adders 10, reference voltage sources 11, indicators 12 of discrete values of levels, level indicator 13, timer 14. EFFECT: enhanced operational reliability of method. 2 cl, 2 dwg
