FIELD: production of paint and varnish resins. SUBSTANCE: formaldehyde is used as reagent 1, acetaldehyde is used as reagent 2, their ratio being 5.4: 1. Reaction is carried out in aqueous medium, calcium oxide and boric acid (its quantity is 0.115 moles per 1 mole of acetaldehyde) or sodium tetraborate (its quantity is 0.019 moles per 1 mole of acetaldehyde) being presented in reaction mixture. It is preferable to sustain reaction mixture at 25-30 C till content of aldehydes is 2.5-3.0 mass %. Yield of pentaerytritol is 85.5-86 mol %, main substance content in it being 98.9-99 %. Melting point of desired product is 256-258 C, content of dipentaerytritol in it being 0.3-0.4 %. EFFECT: improves efficiency of method. 1 tbl
