FIELD: chemistry, production of quaternary ammonium compounds. SUBSTANCE: improved method for producing tris-(2oxyethyl)ammonium-o-cresoxyacetate (trade name "cresacin") resides in reacting sodium o-cresylate with sodium salt of monochloroacetic acid. Both components are prepared separately. Sodium cresylate is prepared from cresol and caustic soda at room temperature. Monochloroacetic acid sodium salt is prepared from monochloroacetic acid and sodium bicarbonate at 30 C. Monochloroacetic acid sodium salt is added to sodium cresylate at reaction mass temperature 95-107 C, preferably 100-105 C, followed by separating o-cresoxyacetic acid from its sodium salt by hydrochloric acid. Next o-cresoxyacetic acid is reacted with triethanol amine in acetone or isopropyl alcohol medium, molar ratio of o-resol-to-monochloroacetic acid-to-caustic soda-to-sodium bicarbonate-to-water being 1: (1.150-1.2210):1.4833:0.0071:15.15, preferably being 1:(1.180-1.220):1.4833: 0.0071: 15.15. 0-cresoxyacetic acid sodium salt is purified from o-cresol by distilling it off by live steam. O-cresoxyacetic acid is recrystallized from 60-70%-isopropyl alcohol at weight ratio (4.4922-5.1702) using activated grade "A" coal in amount 10% based on weight of 100%-o-cresoxyacetic acid. Cresacin yield from theoretical value, based on o-cresol content, is increased from 52 to 74.26%, it is pharmaceutically acceptable and needs no recrystallization.
