FIELD: transport engineering; heavy dump trucks, trailer-trains and diesel locomotives. SUBSTANCE: self-contained traction electric drive has primary motor which sets into rotation a synchronous generator with braking resistors connected to beginning of phase windings of generator. Inputs of two anti-parallel connected single phase thyristor bridges are connected to beginning and ends of phase windings. Outputs of bridges are connected into ring circuit to nodes of which phase windings of AC traction motor are connected. Electric drives provides direct conversion of energy of diesel generator plant in traction mode into traction energy of motors-in-wheels with stepless speed control of vehicle, and at braking mode it provides conversion of accumulated kinetic and potential energies into electric energy with controlled stepless conversion of electric energy into thermal energy to ensure stepless speed control at braking of vehicle. All this is done without additional relay-contactor, capacitive and reactor equipment with brushless electrical machines. EFFECT: improved efficiency, enhanced reliability of operation. 2 dwg
