FIELD: petroleum processing. SUBSTANCE: raw material is treated with elementary sulfur in quantity 0.5-1.5 mol per 1 mol of mercaptan sulfur in presence of 0.001-0.3 wt % ammonia or organic amine at 15-60 C. According to invention, sulfur is introduced into raw material in the form of its solution in crude oil, gas condensate, or low-boiling fraction, whereas organic amine is benzylamine, dimethylalkylamines C10-C16, trialkylamines C7-C9, polyethylenepolyamines, ethanolamine, methyldiethanolamine, or their mixtures. EFFECT: essentially enhanced efficiency of process, reduced cost due to using inexpensive oxidant and reducing power consumption. 3 cl, 1 tbl
