FIELD: railway transport; checking facilities. SUBSTANCE: in proposed method infrared radiation of axle-box unit is converter into electric signal characteristic of heating and degree of heating is judged by comparing signal level with level of reference voltage formed by limitation of electric signal corresponding to infrared radiation from sky background in zone of inspection of axle box unit. Device has receiving capsule with infrared radiation thermoelectric converter, reference voltage shaper, amplifier unit, control and monitoring signal shaper coupled with train axle passage pickups, monitoring signal recorder and follow-up amplitude limiter. The latter has signal level limiting unit, series-connected half-wave rectifiers, signal amplitude-time characteristic analyzer, matching element and inverter.
