STEEL TAPPING LAUNDER FOR MIXING STEEL WITH REFINERY SLAG Russian patent published in 1998 - IPC

FIELD: metallurgical industry; equipment for extrafurnace steel refining. SUBSTANCE: the offered launder has trough-like framework lines with refractory material. Adjoined to straight channel of launder is channel in form of branch for supply of refining slag. Beginning part of refractory brick laying of launder bottom is raised as compared with the remaining part of bottom and forms threshold with overhand. Made under overhang is slag-supplying channel transverse to direction of metal motion. This slag-supplying channel serves for supply of refinery slag and locates under overhang and passes into slotted opening. Behind the threshold, straight section of launder is made with side walls converging and ends in hollow of discharge funnel. The latter is made in form of bowl lines with refractory material. Funnel is located with displacement from side straight wall of launder through a radius of funnel lined bowl. The design allows active forced mixing of steel and refinery slag on all stages of melt moving over launders into teeming slag. Satisfactory averaging of chemical composition and temperature in volume of steel teeming ladle provides for production of ingots of high homogeneity and purity with respect to nonmetallic inclusions.
