FIELD: mechanical engineering; laser welding. SUBSTANCE: laser radiation impulse is concave curve in coordinates of power density q - time t. Length of initial section of curve is determined by time required for forming sufficiently large amount of melt. Power density on this section should not exceed value corresponding to developed evaporation of metal. Radiation power density on initial section and length of this section depend on diameter of laser radiation focal spot diameter on surface of workpieces to be welded. The smaller the diameter of focal spot on surface of butt joint of workpieces, the greater the curvature of curve q(t). Set for impulse laser welding has supply source in which discharge current through laser pumping tube is set by power transistor controlled by computer through power transistor control unit and feedback unit, and radiator and optical unit members are arranged to provide optimum values of laser radiation spatial characteristics. EFFECT: enlarged operating capabilities, enhanced quality of welds. 16 cl, 4 dwg
