FIELD: determination of distance covered by walking operator in specified direction with use of radio and electronic aids. SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in sports, tourism and other fields. Self- contained navigation system incorporates self-contained navigation instruments and data input-output unit. Each self-contained navigation instrument has computer, permanent storage, on-line storage, indication register, angle register, circuit selecting operational mode, digital indicators, circuit controlling indicators, navigation meter, electron key, former of analog signals, phase-to-code converter, angle orientation transmitter, circuit measuring period of step, step sensor and connector. Mass and size characteristics of self-contained navigation instruments are diminished thanks to reduction of controls. Employment of input-output unit enhances accuracy of determination of current coordinates of operator and distance to objective due to input of coefficients A and B individual for operator into instrument, due to measurement of period of his step and computation of current length of his step.
